State of the State of Substance Abuse Prevention

Overview of Florida's accomplishments and challenges in its 8-year campaign to reduce youth substance abuse. Trends and future directions.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
William H. Janes, was appointed Director of the Florida Office of Drug Control by Governor Charlie Crist. In that position, he is responsible for the coordination of all state efforts to decrease drug abuse and its consequences in Florida. As Assistant Secretary for Substance Abuse and Mental Health for the Florida Department of Children and Families, he is responsible for the statewide substance abuse and mental health systems, with an approximate budget of $92.3 million annually, providing service to over 400,000 customers.
From 1992-2002, Bill Janes was a counselor, manager, and executive director for the Drug Abuse comprehensive Coordinating Office (DACCO) in Tampa. From 2002-2006, he served as the Director, national Terrorism Prevention Institute at St. Petersburg College. He served a full career in the United States Army and retired as a Colonel of Armor.

New Advances in Relapse Prevention
SPEAKER:
Terence T. Gorski, MA, MAC, NACII Administrator, Clinician, Author & Consultant The CENAPS Corporation Spring Hill, Florida
The goal of this 1-hour session is for participants to learn how to identify substance-induced depression, situation depression in sobriety, or co-occurring depressive illness.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
1. Explain risk and protective factors associated with depression and addiction; 2. Explain the bio-psychosocial model of depression and the self- reinforcement cycle of depression and substance abuse; 3. Utilize assessment tools and presenting problem analysis; 4. Review treatment options, including, psychotherapy, medication management, cognitive therapy and patient education; 5. Teach clients effective management strategies to manage depression and avoid relapse; and 6. Develop a recovery plan for depression and relapse, including the importance of family and social support networks.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Terence T. Gorski is a pioneeer in the development of Relapse Prevention Therapy, who has achieved international acclaim for his work. He is considered a leader and authority in the behavioral health and social services industries.
Mr. Gorski is the Founder and President of the CENAPS Corporation, a training and consultation firm, that provides solutions to the problems of relapse. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Sociology form Northeastern Illinois University, and a Master of Arts Degree from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri. He is also a Master Addiction Counselor (MAC), Nationally Certified Addiction Counselor (NCAC II), and a Senior Certified Addiction Counselor (CSAC in the State of Illinois.
Mr. Gorski's practical approach to recovery and relapse prevention is based on more than thirty years experience as a therapist, supervisor, program administrator, and consultant. He has become a leading authority on the use of brief therapy models for preventing relapse and using cognitive, affective, and behavioral therapy methods. His greatest talent is his ability to break down the relapse prevention process into clear and simple steps that can be used by professionals working in the chemical dependency field, the criminal justice system, and the behavioral health field.
Mr. Gorski is a prolific author and has published such classics "Staying Sober: A Guide for Relapse Prevention" and "Passages Through Recovery: An Action Plan for Preventing Relapse".
Terry is also a current member of the Florida School of Addictions Studies Board of Directors.

The goal of this 1-hour session is for participants to understand how good medicine and & bad behavior result in prescription drug abuse.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
1. Identify NASPER and its implication for healthcare providers; and 2. Understand unique properties of buprenorphine and how they can benefit addition professionals.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Dr. William S. (Bill) Jacobs is a triple boarded pain and addiction specialist, who provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of patients suffering from chronic pain with or without coexisting addiction issues.
Dr. Jacobs is a board certified anesthesiologist, with additional certifications from the American Board of Pain Medicine and the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Jacobs has extensive private practice and academic experience, including treating patients who other Heath Care providers have considered complex or difficult.

SPEAKER:
Robert L. Piper, LMHC, Vice President First Step of Sarasota Sarasota, FL
The goal of this 1-hour session is for participants to:
1. Understand the disease concept of addiction disorders; 2. Clarify the types of "usage" other than the Disease progression; and 3. Understand the co-occurring possibilities of mental illness, AXIS II disorders, pervasive developmental disorders.
Keys to recovery will be explored.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Robert L. (Bob) Piper is a masters level Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a 35 year career in treating addiction disorders. Bob has held executive administrative positions and maintained a private practice. Bob received the Counselor of the Year Award in 1984 from the Florida Alcohol and Drug Abuse Association; served as the President of the Board of Directors in 2005 for the Florida School of Addictions Studies; served on a state-wide co-occurring workgroup for FADAA and the Florida Council on Mental Health; served on CIT (Crisis Intervention Training) Executive Committee with Sarasota County Law Enforcement; served as Chairman of the Project Management Team for Sarasota County Cart Phase II Initiative; and is a current or past faculty member of the Florida School of Addictions Studies, the University of South Florida Rehabilitation Counseling Department, the Manatee Community College-South Campus, and the Sarasota High School Peer Counseling Program. Bob has been the Vice President of First Step of Sarasota since 1995.
Bob is also a Past President and current member of the FSAS Board of Directors. |
